LIGHT FANTASTIC (Dicgottago)       £6.50

2007

Masses of lemon/cream "old English" type blooms are beautifully contrasted by dense, glossy,

mid-green foliage. The blooms are very full, light scented and are abundant throughout the flowering period. The plant is of medium height and has a very bushy habit. Disease resistance is excellent.

WILD THING (Jactoose)        £7.95

2008

A wonderful Flori-Shrub from Jackson & Perkins, highly productive in the amount of flower it produces. Though the blooms are just semi-double with 8 petals and are smallish in size, around 7 cm, they are often produced in clusters of 5 - 55, which means there is a spectacular show of colour of a clean vibrant mid-pink with ivory eye right until petal-drop when the colour intensifies to a deeper pink. It really is quite stunning to see this variety in full flower. Height is around 80 cm with a spread of approximately 118 cm which makes it a quite manageable plant worthy of growing in a pot. Foliage is dense, medium size, mid-green and glossy. Good health is a strong point and it's just a shame that fragrance is slight. And yes, just in case you wondered.....it was named after The Troggs hit of the 1960s!

ISN’T SHE LOVELY (Diciluvit)        £6.75
2008

A truly appropriate name for a classic HT which has superb lasting quality. The pointed buds are creamy gold with a slight pink edge and they open to ivory with a centre showing deep tones of pink and gold. Some blooms can appear to be completely ivory.

A true HT as it produces only single, full petalled blooms which are approximately 11.5 cm in diameter. It is slightly lower than average height at around 80 cm and plant habit is upright to bushy. Foliage is dense, medium size, dark green and semi-glossy. A strong-growing plant with excellent disease-resistance and a pleasant fragrance. Already a success on the show benches!

GEORGE BEST (Dichimanher)            £10.00

2007

Named in honour of the late, great footballer this is, quite naturally, red in colour. Borne in clusters of eight to twenty, the deep red buds gradually lighten in shade to finish as a pinkish red. The small to medium size blooms are very abundant. It is a low growing and bushy plant with dense small, mid- to dark green glossy foliage. Can be planted in large tubs as well as in the ground.

We are happy to name a rose for our much admired fellow countryman and a donation of £5 from every plant sold will be made to the George Best Foundation.

MAID OF HONOUR (Jacwhink)            £7.50

2010

It may only have five petals, but what a performer this rose is!  The bushes are literally smothered in dainty, delicate pale pink flowers, with tiny mid green glossy foliage.  Habit is manageable, so you may wish to classify “Maid of Honour” as a shrublet.  It makes a superb container grown rose and also is fantastic as a half standard.   Its disease and weather resistance is truly terrific.

The Gold Standard Trials are the result of a joint initiative between professional rose breeders represented by BARB (British Association of Rose Breeders) and NIAB (National Institute of Agricultural Botany). Unlike some other rose trials, breeders pay a fee for each rose variety submitted to the trials, independently managed by NIAB at their Cambridge headquarters.

Based on cumulative information from invited independent judges throughout the two year period of the trial, the Gold Standard is awarded to worthy varieties. Health, floriferousness, scent and commercial appeal are all considered key factors.

All the Gold Standard roses can be viewed at Roath Park, Cardiff and, from 2010, at Borde Hill Garden, Haywards Heath, West Sussex.
